This is not for the faint of heart.

A nameless friend asked me to tell her family's story. It is not a happy story. It does not have a happy ending. Things are left out and added so as not to violate anyone's privacy. I really wanted to make this story a fantasy story gone bad or a some other piece of fiction but fiction allows for happy endings, real life doesn't always do that. So without much ado, below is he story of a tragic little girl.

In Reality, Good Does Not Always Win

There lived a bad man who came from a bad family. He met a girl who had a daughter. Together they had a son but their relationship was bound to fail. He was evil, it was the only thing he had been taught. Like a bomb they exploded and soon they were sharing custody of their son. The daughter, sweet and innocent, did not want to be away from her brother and so she too went to her step-father's house where cruelty lived unbeknownst to them all. The mother moved on with her life, she did her job as a mother, she traded in men and found a girlfriend to care for her and her children.

This is not a happy tale of a modern family learning to cope with children and co-parenting. Instead this is a tale of a family torn apart by abuse. The children came home one day and the girl, trusting and naïve, had a complaint. She was in pain and could not explain it. She told her mommy's girlfriend, whom she cares for deeply, that it hurt when she went to the bathroom. She had eaten spicy chips so no one thought anything of it, at least until her secret relationship with her step-father came to light. With a bolt of rage the girl's family fell apart. All the little girl had known was shattered. A man she loved and trusted had violated her and now everyone knew. She lived in constant fear and anxiety and matters only got worse when she had to go to court.

The man who raped her had a sick family. They made excuses for him, they lied for him and all of this gave him freedom to his son. Lucky for the girl bikers came to support her at the trial. They created a loving circle of support for her but nothing could convince the courts that the man was all that bad. They gave him shared custody of his son. He in turn spread lies about the girl's mother, he continued to victimize her by spreading lies about the girl's mother's partner, he eventually cost the girl's mother so much time, money and grievances that she had to sign away custody of their son. In the end the girl grew up forever knowing she had been failed. She felt empty, used and forever void of trust of adults. The father figure in her life abused her young, innocent body. This is not a tale of good defeating evil, rather it is evil beating good. Evil destroyed one innocent life and took another to raise in its evil ways. Sadly this is the way of the world, sometimes a scorched earth is left behind in the wake of a destructive fire leaving and the regrowth of life is impossible.

The Woods

I entered the woods to find a mystery. I waited until nightfall since that is when all the scary things come out to play. I dressed warmly and brought some snacks then set out to see what I could find. I heard an owl cry for the night and a wolf howl at the moon, leaves rustled in the wind and a chill swept over me. Only slightly scared, I pressed on trying to find my way. I searched in hollow trees and rock caves only to find bug and twigs. I searched and sought the night for something, anything that could incite fear. I grew tired and found a soft patch of ground to rest. I ate my granola bar and listened to the absolute silence of the full moon lit sky. I grew dreary and eventually fell asleep. My dreams were full of nightmares. Ghouls and terrors chased me through the forest, sending me screaming through the night. The demons chasing me sent me flying off a cliff to my ultimate death but when I awoke I was not dead. Rather I was sleeping in the nook of a tree. Nothing harmed me, nothing chased me, nothing scary happened. The only mystery I found was the mystery of my own mind well I explored the calm and quiet woods.
