The
Hawk and the Prairie Dog
There
once lived a prairie dog in Clement Park. She was a brilliant rodent
who was savvy at protecting her numerous brothers and sisters from
predators. She made traps so foxes and coyotes could not get in their
homes and she collected bird feathers so they could run around during
the day and look like the hawks in the sky. One day, the day was warm
and the breeze had disappeared. A hawk had landed in the field where
the prairie dogs were searching for food.
“Little
prairie dog, you are not hiding very well in those ridiculous
feathers,” said the hawk.
“It
has worked well so far! You have not eaten us and neither has anyone
else!” barked the prairie dog.
“This
lack of a breeze is killing me. I just want to soar in the sky not
stay here on the ground. This is miserable,” the hawk just looked
at the sky surveying the clouds around her.
“You
aren't here to eat us?” inquired the prairie dog.
“Oh
no no! A little mouse every so often is more than enough for me. You
prairie dogs are far too large and even when I have babies I only
catch rabbits for my hatchlings. Rabbits are far too obnoxious to be
concerned about. I like flying above your family and watching you all
skitter around the fields. It's quite amusing!” the prairie dog was
so confused by this. She was taught to fear all land and air
predators with beaks and claws and teeth that would tear them apart.
How could this hawk be so different.
“It's
okay hawk, I don't like rabbits either. They eat our bugs and flowers
and they make people think they are so cute,” scuffed the prairie
dog to the hawk.
“I
like your amusing costumes to confuse us sky creatures but it won't
protect you. I will protect you if you guys continue to run around in
them. I do enjoy watching you all play,” in that moment the prairie
dog didn't look at the hawk like a predator but instead as a graceful
creature from the clouds.
“You
have a deal hawk! While there is no wind would you like to walk with
us as we pick flowers and bugs?” asked the prairie dog.
The
hawk nodded yes and a beautiful friendship occurred between the hawks
and the prairie dogs of the area. The hawk spent everyday with the
prairie dog family and protected them from humans and animals alike.

The
Kenney Boys
Three
little boys,
Always
covered in dirt,
They
smile and play,
Giving
their dog Rascal
A
run for his money.
With
hearts of gold,
The
Kenney boys
Love
Jesus and their church.
They
never feel alone
Since
they always have each other,
This
breeds chaos all around,
Someone
is always bruised or broken.
They
laugh like the room is a full tickle
And
enjoy chasing the chickens.
Mud,
dinosaurs, cuts and cars,
Through
and through they are boys,
Boys
with missing teeth
And
almost always missing shirts,
Each
one every bit a Kenney.
